Your central hub for organizing, browsing, sharing, and exporting the documentation you create with DocuWriter.ai.

What is a Space?

A Space is a self-contained workspace that holds pages, folders, and files in an intuitive sidebar tree. Use Spaces to keep code docs, API specs, READMEs, and free-form notes together.

  • Use Private Spaces for internal or client-only work. Private Spaces are only visible to authorized users.
  • Use Public Spaces to showcase open-source projects or product docs. Anyone with the public docs link can read them.

Many generators, such as Tree Documentation and Codebase Documentation, can create a Space automatically.

Creating a Space

  1. Navigate to Spaces in the top bar.
  2. Click New Space.
  3. Give it a name and choose Private or Public visibility.
  4. Click Create.

Your empty Space is ready to organize.

Space Overview

When you open a Space, the Overview page is your command center.

Space description

Every Space can have a rich description. Think of it as the README for your documentation. You can:

  • Edit manually with the pencil icon.
  • Generate with AI with the sparkles button.

Connected repository

The Connected repository card links your Space to a Git repository. This connection powers features like Update Documentation Gaps, Autopilot, and AI accuracy reviews.

  • Connect a repository from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or Azure DevOps.
  • Use Change to link another indexed repository or import a new repository and branch.
  • Review the linked repository, branch, provider icon, and last sync when available.

To configure Autopilot links, notification channels, or the audit log, open Settings in the Space sidebar. See the Autopilot section for setup.

Update documentation

The green Update documentation button opens the AI-powered gap analysis tool. It analyzes the connected repository, finds documentation gaps, and lets you review proposed additions or updates.

Export and download

Spaces support several export options:

  • Download selected content pages or all content pages as a Markdown ZIP from sidebar selection mode.
  • Export a single page as PDF, Markdown, or Word (DOCX) from the page editor.
  • Export the whole Space to Git with Export to Git /docs.
  • Export the whole Space to Confluence with Confluence.
  • Use the Copy page menu in the page header to copy a page or open it in ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity.

Using the Platform AI Agent in Spaces

The Platform AI Agent is available from the chat button on supported signed-in app pages and uses Space context when available.

You can ask it to:

  • List folders and pages in the current Space.
  • Search for pages across accessible documentation.
  • Read a page without leaving your current workflow.
  • Draft a new page for your review.
  • Propose updates to an existing page.
  • Help check a page against linked source code.
  • Explain Space settings, exports, repository connections, and Autopilot.
  • Help you find pending Autopilot suggestions.

Content changes are shown for review before they are applied. Setup tasks that require provider authorization, billing, downloads, or external services are completed from the relevant page.

Sidebar and navigation

The left-hand sidebar is your table of contents. Use + Add item or the small + icon that appears on hover to build your structure.

Item types

Type Use it for
Generation Attach a document produced with DocuWriter.ai, such as UML, Swagger, tests, or code docs.
Blank page Start with an empty markdown canvas for notes or extra explanations.
Folder Group related pages and keep the sidebar tidy.

Navigation features

  • Drag and drop items to reorder them.
  • Collapse and expand folders to browse large Spaces.
  • Folder counts show the number of items inside a folder.

Customizable sidebar

  • Resizable width: drag the right edge of the sidebar to make it wider or narrower.
  • Persistent sizing: your preferred width is remembered between sessions.

Editing pages

Click any page in the sidebar to open the rich markdown editor.

  • Use / or the + button to insert headings, lists, code blocks, images, alerts, tables, and more.
  • Use the block menu to convert, move, or delete blocks.
  • Use undo and redo from the editor toolbar.
  • Changes auto-save continuously.

Page actions

Page controls give you extra options for the current page:

  • Page settings: rename, set icons, or move the page.
  • Share: generate a view-only link.
  • Copy page: copy the page content.
  • Open in ChatGPT, Open in Claude, or Open in Perplexity.
  • Download/export: save the current page as PDF, Markdown, or Word (DOCX).

Tips for productive Spaces

  • Start simple: add a folder per module or feature, then drop in docs as they are generated.
  • Mix AI-generated docs with your own notes, usage guides, decisions, and troubleshooting.
  • Keep the sidebar tidy with folders and clear page names.
  • For generated pages, use Manage from the Generations table to choose the definitive version shown in the Space.
