Export to Confluence

Push your Space documentation directly to Confluence Cloud or Confluence Server so your team's knowledge base stays in sync.

What Confluence export does

Confluence export publishes a DocuWriter.ai Space as Confluence pages. It can:

  • Export pages and folders from your Space.
  • Preserve the Space hierarchy as parent and child pages.
  • Include images from your pages when possible.
  • Create new pages or update existing pages.
  • Export to an existing Confluence space or create a new Confluence space during export.

For all export options, including Markdown ZIP, Git, PDF, Markdown, and Word, see Export and download Spaces.

Connect Confluence

Before exporting, create a Confluence connection in DocuWriter.ai.

  1. Open Integrations.
  2. Go to Confluence Connections.
  3. Click Add connection.
  4. Choose your authentication method.
Method Best for
API Token Confluence Cloud. This is recommended for most teams.
OAuth 2.0 Confluence Cloud teams that prefer OAuth authorization.
Personal Access Token Confluence Server or Data Center.

API token setup for Confluence Cloud

  1. Go to your Atlassian account security settings.
  2. Create an API token.
  3. Copy the token.
  4. In DocuWriter.ai, enter your Confluence email and API token.
  5. Save the connection.

If Atlassian asks you to choose scopes, include the permissions needed to read space information, create and update pages, create spaces when needed, and upload attachments for images.

OAuth setup for Confluence Cloud

  1. Click Connect with Confluence in DocuWriter.ai.
  2. Authorize DocuWriter.ai to access your Confluence instance.
  3. Return to DocuWriter.ai after authorization.

Your connection is created automatically when the authorization flow completes.

Personal access token setup for Confluence Server

  1. In Confluence Server or Data Center, open your profile settings.
  2. Go to Personal Access Tokens.
  3. Create a token and copy it.
  4. In DocuWriter.ai, enter your Confluence Server URL and token.
  5. Save the connection.

Export a Space to Confluence

  1. Open the Space you want to export.
  2. Go to the Space Overview.
  3. Click Confluence.
  4. Select your Confluence connection.
  5. Choose an existing Confluence space, or choose to create a new one.
  6. Choose how existing pages should be handled.
  7. Click Export.

The export runs in the background. DocuWriter.ai notifies you when it finishes or if it needs attention.

Update behavior options

Option What happens
Create new pages Creates pages in Confluence. If a page with the same title already exists, DocuWriter.ai avoids overwriting it.
Update existing pages Updates matching Confluence pages when possible and creates new pages when no match is found.

Choose Create new pages for a first export or when you want a fresh copy. Choose Update existing pages when you already exported the Space and want to keep Confluence current.

Create a new Confluence space during export

If you do not already have a target Confluence space, you can create one during export.

  1. In the export modal, choose Create new space.
  2. Enter a Space name.
  3. Enter a Space key.
  4. Confirm the export.

The key must be unique in your Confluence instance. If the key is already used, choose another one or export to the existing space.

How your Space appears in Confluence

DocuWriter.ai keeps your Space structure easy to browse after export:

  • Folders become parent pages.
  • Pages become Confluence pages.
  • Nested pages stay nested under their parent.
  • Root pages become top-level pages in the selected Confluence space.

Most common page content, including headings, lists, code blocks, tables, images, diagrams, and callouts, is converted for Confluence display.

Troubleshooting

Issue What to check
Connection test fails Check that the token, OAuth connection, or server URL is still valid.

Images are missing Confirm your Confluence connection can upload attachments.
Page hierarchy looks wrong Review your Space folder structure before exporting again.
Export fails or does not finish Check the notification, verify the connection, and retry the export.
