Slack Agent

Use the DocuWriter Platform AI Agent from a private conversation with the DocuWriter app in Slack. It uses the same DocuWriter permissions, action approvals, and Agent capabilities as the web Agent, with Slack-specific presentation and privacy controls.

Install the Slack app

A signed-in DocuWriter user who has permission to add apps to the Slack workspace can install the app:

Open Settings → Integrations in DocuWriter.
In the Slack section, select Add to Slack.
Choose the Slack workspace and approve the requested permissions.
Open the DocuWriter app in Slack and send it a private message.

The Slack app requests:

assistant:write for Slack Agent features and thread status
chat:write to send and update private Agent messages
im:history to retrieve the private conversation only while handling a request

If Slack permissions later change, DocuWriter shows Needs attention in Settings. Reinstall the app to restore the required permissions.

Link your DocuWriter account

Installing the app connects the Slack workspace, but it does not automatically link Slack users to DocuWriter accounts. Each person links their own account:

Send the DocuWriter app a private Slack message.
Open the secure DocuWriter link it sends.
Sign in and confirm the DocuWriter account shown in the browser.
Return to the original private Slack conversation and confirm the masked account details there.

The link completes only after the matching browser confirmation and Slack confirmation. A copied, expired, replayed, or mismatched link does not connect an account.

Each linked Slack user keeps their own DocuWriter permissions. Sharing a Slack workspace does not grant access to another DocuWriter team.

Use the Agent in Slack

Ask naturally in the private app conversation. For example:

Top-level private messages continue the active direct-message conversation. Replies inside a Slack thread stay isolated to that thread.

Send new conversation or /new as an exact message to reset the active direct-message conversation. Resetting conversation context does not cancel an existing approval or a workflow already in progress.

Supported capability groups

The Slack Agent uses the same 22 grouped Platform Agent capabilities as the web Agent. The groups cover:

These are 22 grouped Agent capabilities, not 22 individual customer actions. DocuWriter MCP currently exposes 72 separate tools for supported external assistants. Slack does not call or duplicate the MCP wrappers; it invokes the shared Platform Agent and normal DocuWriter authorization services directly.

For codebase documentation and full-tree documentation, Slack confirms that the long-running workflow started and directs you to DocuWriter for its current progress or review. Other supported generator families return their completed result in the private Slack conversation when they finish within the Slack request flow.

Approvals and browser handoffs

Reads and guidance can complete directly in Slack. A request that changes DocuWriter, starts a generator, revokes a connection, or sends support must be approved first.

The approval message shows the proposed action in the private Slack conversation. Select Approve or Reject. DocuWriter rechecks your linked identity, team membership, resource access, current version, workspace policy, and destination before execution.

DocuWriter may use a secure browser handoff when:

an external account must be authorized;
files, repositories, branches, or a generated tree must be selected or reviewed;
billing, password, API-token, download, or other browser-only work is required;
an approval is too large or unsuitable for safe Slack presentation.

Opening a handoff does not perform the action. Sensitive handoffs are short-lived, single-use, and bound to the signed-in DocuWriter account and exact operation.

Stop or cancel a request

While a request is still safe to stop, use its Stop control or send stop or cancel as an exact private message.

If a change or external request may already have been accepted, DocuWriter does not pretend it was cancelled and does not run it again blindly. It keeps the authoritative result or reconciliation state and reports the confirmed outcome when available.

Slack privacy and team controls

Slack privacy is designed around transient message access and metadata-only retention. Slack message content remains hosted in Slack and is fetched just in time for the current private request. DocuWriter does not save Slack prompts, replies, thread transcripts, selected source content, tool arguments or results, or approval payload content in Platform Agent conversations, channel records, queues, failed jobs, logs, analytics, or exception details.

DocuWriter keeps only the metadata needed to operate and audit the integration, such as installation and linked-account references, conversation/run states, requested and actual delivery states, opaque message references, keyed digests, versions, counts, and timestamps.

By default, installed capabilities are available immediately after a user links their account. A DocuWriter team owner can restrict the Platform Agent, changes/generators, or support requests in Settings → Integrations → Slack. These controls can only reduce access; they never grant a user more DocuWriter permission.

The owner can keep integration metadata for 1, 7, 14, or 30 days. The default is 30 days. Product documents, generations, and other DocuWriter resources follow their normal product retention rules.

The full Agent does not run in public channels, private shared channels, group messages, or Slack Connect conversations. Slack workspace membership is transport context only; DocuWriter authorization always comes from the linked DocuWriter user and their one effective personal or team context.

Unlink, disconnect, or uninstall Slack

To unlink one Slack identity from DocuWriter, open Settings → Integrations → Slack and select Disconnect beside the account. A user can disconnect themselves; the DocuWriter team owner can manage linked team members.

Disconnecting removes the Slack identity and delivery destination from DocuWriter, cancels pending Slack approvals, and prevents future delivery to that identity. It does not delete documents or other normal DocuWriter product resources.

Uninstalling the DocuWriter app from Slack revokes the installation and removes its token and linked Slack delivery state. Reinstalling the app does not silently relink users; each user completes account linking again.

Troubleshooting

No response: Make sure you are messaging the DocuWriter app privately, the app is installed, and your DocuWriter account is linked.
Link expired or account did not match: Start a new private message and complete both confirmations again.
Needs attention: Reinstall the Slack app from DocuWriter Settings so the requested permissions are current.
Approval is stale: Ask the Agent to prepare the action again. Access, policy, destination, or resource content may have changed.
A final Slack message could not be confirmed: Retry a safe read in Slack or open DocuWriter to inspect the authoritative resource. DocuWriter does not automatically repeat a change whose outcome may already exist.
Team capability unavailable: Ask the DocuWriter team owner to review the Slack controls in Settings.
