Understanding Credits & Usage

A complete guide to DocuWriter.ai's credit system and what counts as an AI generation.

What are credits?

Credits are the units used to track AI-powered generation usage in DocuWriter.ai. Think of credits as fuel for our AI generators — each time you create documentation, tests, or optimizations using AI, you consume credits from your workspace pool.

Key Points:

  • Credits belong to the workspace owner
  • When team members generate documentation, credits are deducted from the owner's pool
  • Check your remaining credits anytime: Profile → Billing → Usage
  • Credits reset monthly based on your subscription billing cycle

What consumes credits? (AI generations)

The following AI-powered generation activities consume credits from your workspace:

Documentation generators

  • Documentation Generation — Generating technical documentation from source code files
  • API Documentation — Creating OpenAPI/Swagger specifications from your API code
  • Tree Documentation — Generating complete documentation for entire repositories
  • Full API Documentation — Comprehensive API reference generation
  • README Generation — AI-created README files for your projects

Code enhancement generators

  • Test Generation — Creating unit tests and test suites
  • Code Optimization — AI-powered code refactoring and improvements
  • Code Comments — Generating DocBlock comments and inline documentation

Autopilot (Enterprise / Unlimited)

  • 1 credit per Autopilot suggestion generated, not per Apply click. Apply, auto-apply, and dismiss are free.
  • Example: a PR touches 3 doc pages → 3 suggestions generated → 3 credits.

General rule

Any use of AI Generator tools (found under the "Generators" section in your workspace) will consume 1 credit per generation.

What does NOT consume credits?

These features are completely free and do NOT deduct credits from your workspace:

AI-powered features

  • Asking questions about your Spaces — Use AI Q&A to query your documentation without consuming credits
  • AI-Powered Search — Intelligent search within your documentation spaces
  • Autopilot Preview (Trial / Pro) — viewing suggestions, diffing, and dismissing are 100% free. Capped at 50 suggestions/day; the rest arrives as a daily digest email.

Standard platform features

  • Browsing & viewing documents — Reading your existing documentation
  • Manual editing — Creating or editing documentation pages manually
  • Searching documents — Full-text search across your spaces
  • Creating & managing Spaces — Organizing your documentation
  • Team collaboration — Inviting members, commenting, sharing
  • Exporting documents — Downloading to Markdown, PDF, or other formats
  • Version history — Viewing and restoring previous versions

Important: The AI Q&A feature ("Ask AI" about your documentation) is FREE and does not consume any credits. You can ask questions about your documentation spaces without worrying about credit usage.

Credit limits by subscription tier

Your monthly credit allocation depends on your plan:

Plan Monthly price Credits Spaces
Professional $49/mo 200 generations Up to 5
Enterprise $129/mo 500 generations Unlimited
Unlimited $299/mo Unlimited Unlimited

Annual billing is available at around 20% off.

The Unlimited plan has no per-generation cap and includes every Enterprise feature plus early access to new releases.

Tip: Need more credits mid-cycle? Purchase a one-off credit pack from Profile → Extra credits.

How many credits do I need for my project?

It depends on your project size and how you use DocuWriter. Here's a rough guide.

Initial full project documentation:

  • Small project — 20 to 40 credits
  • Medium project — 40 to 80 credits
  • Large project — 100 to 200 credits

Autopilot:

  • Trial / Pro: $0. Preview never touches your credits.
  • Enterprise / Unlimited: 1 credit per generated suggestion. Most teams see a few credits per PR — Autopilot only suggests where docs are actually affected, and skips lockfile, docs-only, and tiny changes for free.

Most teams start with a full documentation run, then rely on Autopilot for ongoing updates as code evolves.

Can I buy more credits if I run out?

Yes. You can purchase extra credit packs at any time from your profile. These credits are added on top of your monthly plan credits.

Managing your credits

How to check remaining credits

  1. Navigate to Settings in your workspace

  • All non-generation features continue to work normally
  • AI Q&A continues to work (it's free)
  • Autopilot Preview (Trial / Pro) continues to work — Preview never consumed credits to begin with
  • Creating new AI generations is paused until:- Your next monthly billing cycle, OR
  • You purchase additional credits
